What is Reading Plus?

Reading Plus is an online reading development programme which improves students’ reading fluency, stamina, and comprehension.

How does Reading Plus work?

After completing an initial assessment, Reading Plus places each student at their correct reading age on the programme. Students can then select texts of different genres and types (fiction, non-fiction, informational) suited to their reading age. After reading a text, students are asked ten comprehensive questions. Text selections and questions adapt to reading levels as the students’ progress through the programme. Weekly assignments are set with personalised instructions for students, including visual skills development for eye-tracking, reading tasks for comprehension and fluency, and vocabulary tasks.

Hear from Mrs Law about the programme:

“Reading Plus is a fantastic tool to support students with their reading fluency. We know there is a direct correlation between reading comprehension and outcomes at GCSE and part of our mission at Hampton High has been to create more opportunities for students to read in school and at home. This program can track and monitor the progress of students in real time, and books will become increasingly more complex as they complete their assignments and ‘level up.’ During our pilot in the summer term 2023, Year 7 students read 3.6 million words in just 4 weeks. We look forward to introducing the program to all Year 7 and 8 students from September 2023 as a key part of their curriculum at Hampton High.”
